Tile calibration — the dimensional consistency between individual tiles in a batch — is the single most overlooked quality parameter when importing ceramic and porcelain tiles from China to South Africa. 😰 Stress #1: Your "Rectified" Tiles Aren't Actually Rectified
Many Chinese tile factories label production as "rectified" but only mechanically cut the top surface — leaving the corners un-machined. The result: tiles that LOOK square but have micro-chipped edges that show as white lines with dark grout.
The fix: Specify in your factory agreement that rectification must cut all four edges and both corners. Our inspectors verify edge finish under 5x magnification at 10 tiles per pallet. If more than 5% show edge chipping, the batch fails AQL.

Even rectified tiles can have kiln warpage — the tile bows slightly in the centre. When two warped tiles sit side by side, the centre edges create a visible step (lippage). SA importers often discover this only when the tiler starts installing 500m² of floors.
The fix: Our lippage test is simple: place two tiles face-to-face and slide them. The gap should be ≤0.3mm for rectified tiles. We flag any pallet where more than 8% of tile pairs exceed this — the factory must re-klin or discount.

Real Inspection: Foshan Porcelain Tile Shipment to Durban — July 2026
